Get your text back into Word Beta

Stuck with a PDF you need to actually rewrite? Converting pdf to word extracts the text into an editable .docx file you can open in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice. This tool is in beta: it handles text extraction well, but it won't perfectly recreate the original layout — read the limitations below so you know what to expect.

How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Drop your PDF onto the page. Extraction runs locally in your browser.
  2. Click convert. Text is pulled out page by page into a clean Word document.
  3. Download the .docx and open it in your editor of choice.

Tips for the best results

  • Use text-based PDFs. Files exported from Word or InDesign convert far better than scans — scanned pages are images with no text to extract.
  • Expect to tidy up. Plan a few minutes to fix line breaks, re-apply headings, and reinsert images. It's still much faster than retyping.
  • Need it back as PDF? After editing, convert it back with Word to PDF.

Beta limitations — please read

Original layout, fonts, columns, and images are not preserved — you get the text content in reading order, not a pixel-perfect replica. Complex multi-column layouts may extract out of order, and tables come through as plain text lines. Scanned/image-only PDFs will produce empty or near-empty documents since there's no embedded text. We're improving this; for now, treat it as a fast text-recovery tool.

After conversion: a cleanup checklist

Budget five minutes to polish the result: fix paragraph breaks where the PDF's line breaks split sentences, re-apply heading styles so your document outline works, check that bullet lists didn't flatten into plain paragraphs, and reinsert any images or charts from the original. Tables deserve special attention — verify numbers landed in the right rows. Once it's clean, you've got a fully editable document that took minutes instead of hours to recreate.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF to Word conversion free?
Yes — free and unlimited, even while in beta. No signup, no watermark.
Will my Word file look exactly like the PDF?
No — this beta extracts text content without preserving the original layout, fonts, or images. Expect to do some formatting cleanup.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Not well. Scans are images without embedded text, so there's nothing to extract. It works best on text-based PDFs exported from other software.
Are my files uploaded during conversion?
No. Files never leave your browser — extraction happens entirely on your device.
