Stamp your documents
A watermark marks a document's status at a glance: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, or your company name across every page. When you watermark pdf files with GroPDF, you type the text once and it's stamped diagonally across all pages — a simple, visible deterrent against casual misuse or confusion about a document's status.
How to add a watermark
- Drop your PDF onto the page. It never leaves your device.
- Type your watermark text — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your name, whatever fits.
- Tune the look: drag the opacity slider (lighter = subtler) and set the angle. Tick “Repeat across the page” for a tiled pattern.
- Apply and download. The watermark is baked into every page.
Tips for a professional result
- Keep opacity low. Around 20–30% is visible without making the underlying text hard to read. Higher opacity suits “DO NOT COPY”-style warnings.
- Short text works best. One or two words at 45° reads cleanly; long sentences get cramped and distracting.
- Watermark before sharing, not before editing. Add it as the last step — if you later edit or compress the file, do that first.
Honest limitations
A text watermark is a deterrent, not security: anyone determined can cover or crop it out of a page image. It also can't be selectively applied — every page gets stamped. If you need real access control, wait for our upcoming Protect PDF tool, which will add password encryption.
Watermark vs. header text
A watermark sits behind or across the page content at an angle — impossible to miss. That's different from a header like “Confidential” typed at the top of the page, which readers easily overlook. Use watermarks when the status must be unmistakable (drafts under review, samples sent to prospects); use Edit PDF to add subtle header text when you just want a quiet label.
Removing a watermark later
There's no “unwatermark” button — once stamped, it's part of the page. Always keep the original file. If you think you'll need a clean version later, watermark a copy, not your only master.
